If you are a Mom-to-be who is considering having a C-section, you may want to consider adding chewing gum to your pre-packed hospital bags. The reason for this is not far-fetched; as experts believe chewing gum, especially after giving birth via cesarean section, is quite helpful to new mothers.

As a matter of fact, about one in every five women undergo a C-section and that makes it pertinent for women to know the best methods to regain their bodies back after the procedure.

According to an analysis of 17 studies that was published in the Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine, new mothers who chewed gum soon after delivering via cesarean section started experiencing recovery, particularly of bowel function, sooner than those who didn’t.

For the study, a team of researchers from Italy and Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia analyzed data involving more than 3,000 women who delivered their baby by C-section.

The researchers found that those who chewed gum right after delivery and then again in 30-minute increments three times a day until they passed gas (a sign of normal gastrointestinal functioning), experienced normal bowel movements, and regained their appetite sooner than those that did not chew gum. More so, new mothers that chewed gum after a C-section also reported less nausea or vomiting.

The researchers concluded at the end of the study that as a simple, generally inexpensive intervention, health care providers are advised to consider implementing cesarean postoperative care with gum chewing.

Gastrointestinal issues are one of the potential recovery symptoms. In a cesarean section, the infant is removed from the mother’s body through a surgical incision in her abdomen and uterus; this is sometimes a planned delivery method based on the mother’s health and pre-existing medical conditions, or it may be done as an emergency method if problems arise during labour.

If you are planning on having a C-section, consider adding chewing gums to your hospital bags to help facilitate quick healing of your body.
