EFCC Orders Customs To Monitor Fayose – Arrest Him If He Tries To Flee Nigeria

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has directed the Nigeria customs service to place Ayodele Fayose, outgoing governor of Ekiti, on its watch list.

While the governor is being investigated by the EFCC for alleged abuse of office, money laundering, among others, his tenure ends on October 16.

In a letter dated September 12, and addressed to the comptroller-general of customs, the anti-corruption agency asked the customs to beam its searchlight on Fayose, saying he may be planning to flee the country.

EFCC Orders Customs To Monitor FayoseThe letter which was signed by the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, read in parts:

Request for Watch-Listing of Persons.

Case Of Conspiracy, ABUSE OF OFFICE, CORRUPTION, THEFT AND Money Laundering

The under listed suspect is under investigation in connection with the above mentioned offences and there is a reasonable suspicion suggesting that he may likely leave the country either through the land borders, airports or seaports in order to evade investigation. Hence, you are kindly requested to watch-list him and arrest him.”

EFCC Orders Customs To Monitor FayoseReacting to the directive, the customs instructed all zonal coordinators, area commanders and comptrollers to monitor Fayose.

“Consequently, you are requested to monitor the subject and report to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission through the provided contact details if sighted,” the customs wrote in a letter dated September 14.

Bear in mind that the governor had last week written the Commission, telling it that he will surrender himself to the agency on Tuesday, October 16, 2018.

Fayose has been in a battle of wits with the anti-graft agency and had also been in and out of courts with the commission over his personal and state’s finances.

He is expected to hand over government to Dr Kayode Fayemi, when he completes his tenure on October 16.
