Obama, Trump, Top Celebrities Lose Huge Chunk Of Followers In Twitter Purge
Twitter purge is ongoing! After years of speaking softly, the Micro-blogging platform has decided to wield the big stick and accounts with suspicious tendencies are beginning to feel the mighty rod of Twitter.
Yesterday, 360nobs reported that many accounts, including the popular ones and those with the “blue tick,” lost hundreds of thousands – and running into millions – of followers mysteriously in what seems to be a purge by the micro-blogging outfit.
In its attempt to crackdown on fake and automated accounts, the social media platform had earlier announced that it will remove suspicious accounts from users’ followers to give a “meaningful and accurate” view of follower count.
In a blog post on Wednesday, Twitter said it would make the change by removing from followers any accounts which have been “locked” after sudden changes in behavior, which may signal the people who opened them may no longer be in control.
As of Thursday, President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama lost huge numbers of followers as Twitter purges users it’s “frozen” for exhibiting abusive behavior or signs of being a bot.
It was gathered that Obama, who boasts the most Twitter followers of any former or current head of state, lost around 2.3 million followers from his @BarackObama handle — from 103.6 million Wednesday to 101.3 million Thursday afternoon.
Trump, on the other hand, lost roughly 320,000 followers, from 53.4 million to 53.1 million from his personal @realDonaldTrump account.
Katy Perry, the most followed person on Twitter, lost at least 1.5 million followers, leaving her at 107 million followers while Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, lost about 2 million each, leaving them at 104 million and 83.2 million respectively.
Meanwhile, below are what users are saying with respect to the ongoing Twitter purge.
