Heartburns are an uncomfortable phenomenon that quite a lot of people can relate to, but do you know home remedies that can help you gain relief? Here are five home remedies to combat acid reflux.

Avoid Certain Foods
Fatty foods, spicy foods, alcohol, coffee, and fizzy drinks should all be avoided if you know you are prone to heartburn. All these foods have been known to contribute to acid reflux, and as such, should be consumed in moderation to reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Use Baking Soda
Baking soda has the ability to relieve acid reflux symptoms because it contains carbonate (CO3), which helps restore the acid/alkaline balance in your digestive tract.

If your intent is to temporarily reduce heartburn as a result of acid reflux symptoms, you can simply put one teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink.

You should however take note and avoid taking baking soda for your acid reflux problems on a full stomach.

Take Antacid Chews
While antacid chews are available as over the counter drugs at pharmacies and drug dispensaries, antacid chews like tums are actually a natural remedy for heartburn symptoms.

This is because they are made up of calcium carbonate, which has been proven to quickly neutralize oesophageal acid.

Chew Gum
Chewing gum can help relieve your heartburn or acid reflux by increasing your saliva production, which is a good home remedy. Saliva contains bicarbonate, which neutralizes acid.

A recent research study conducted by the Oklahoma Foundation for Digestive Research found that calcium carbonate gum was more effective in neutralizing acid in the oesophagus than chewable antacids.

Raise The Head Of Your Bed
Nutritionists recommend that you eat at least three hours before you go to bed. The essence of this is to allow your body digest what you feed it with.

However, when you do go to bed, it is recommended that acid-reflux sufferers raise the head of their beds three to six inches high to help cure heartburn. It is easy you use an adjustable bed. Alternatively, you can use pillows to achieve this.
