Are You Losing Followers? Check Your Count As Twitter Purges Fake Accounts

As of Thursday, June 12, try logging into Twitter… Did you noticed a sudden yet unexpected drop in your followers? Yes I did and we definitely not the only one, as some popular accounts have lost hundreds of thousands mysteriously in what seems to be a purge by the micro-blogging outfit.

Twitter Reportedly Suspends 70 Million Accounts In 2 Months

In its attempt to crackdown on fake and automated accounts, the social media platform had earlier announced that it will remove suspicious accounts from users’ followers to give a “meaningful and accurate” view of follower count.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Twitter said it would make the change by removing from followers any accounts which have been “locked” after sudden changes in behavior, which may signal the people who opened them may no longer be in control.

It’s the latest step the social media platform is taking to clean up its platform and promote what CEO Jack Dorsey calls “conversational health.”

Twitter users should see their follower counts decrease this week. The typical user will lose fewer than five followers, while large accounts could experience a “more significant drop,” Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s head counsel, said in post.

“Followercounts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate,” Gadde said.

“This week, we’ll be removing these locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally,” Twitter said.

“As a result, the number of followers displayed on many profiles may go down.”

The San Francisco-based service said it reaches out to owners of locked accounts to confirm all is well and have them reset passwords.

In the meantime, locked accounts were kept in tallies of other Twitter users they “followed.”

Twitter said most of these accounts “were created by real people” but that it locks accounts if it cannot confirm that the original person who opened the account is still in charge.
