15 Senators Dump APC For PDP As Saraki Shuns Police, Presides Over Plenary
There are strong indications that no less than fifteen senators of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have announced their defection to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Nigerian Guardian reports that the Senate President Bukola Saraki, who shunned an invitation from the Nigeria Police Force, made the announcement during the plenary on Tuesday.
“Saraki’s decision not to honour the police invitation may likely not be unrelated to the report that he was going to be impeached by a band of APC senators,” the news outlet said.
“Saraki enjoys qualified parliamentary privilege within the precincts of the parliament.”
“There is a plan for rival Senate group to sit and elect new principal officers today,” a source told The Guardian.
The senate president is also said to have concluded his defection plans from APC sometime this week, a move that would leave the leadership of the Senate in the hands of the PDP.
Meanwhile, the senators that defected include Barnabas Gemade(Benue), Shaaba Lafiaji(Kwara), Rafiu Ibrahim(Kwara), Abdulazeez Nyako(Adamawa), Monsurat Sunmonu(Oyo) and Usman Nafada(Gombe).
Others were Senators Suleiman Hunkuyi, Ibrahim Danbaba, Ubale Shittu, Isah Misau, Suleiman Nazif, Rafiu Ibrahim.
The plenary was later adjourned until September 25.
