It was a brilliant start for the Atlas Lions of Morocco, only for a last minute own goal from Bouhaddouz to ruin their chances of sharing the spoils with Iran.
Morocco were on the front foot from the get go, getting the first chance as early as the third minute, but that went begging. They came closest in the 19th minute, when Benatia’s eight yards shot was saved by Beiranvand.
Good link up play between El Kaabi and Ziyech was another opportunity for the North Africans, but Iran’s goalie was up to the task. The final chance of the game went to the Asians in the 43rd minute, as Jahanbakhsh sent a clever ball through a disorganised Morroco back four. Azmoun picked it up and went through on goal with only Munir to beat, but he was up to the task.
The second half started the same as the first, however, both teams could not put the ball into the net. The 73rd minute was a sad one for Morocco, as one of their threats, Amrabat had to be subbed off after an injury. He was replaced with his brother.
The Atlas Lions threatened some more, but Iran’s goalie, Beiranvand played a key role in keeping them in the game.
Then came the time of woe for Morocco sub, Bouhaddouz, with just one minute left to play, Iran won a freekick.
From the free-kick a delivery is pumped into the near post and under no pressure the sub Bouhaddouz headed the ball past his own goalkeeper.
Iran barely come out of their half for the last 30 minutes but they’re getting a precious three points.
