Apple announced on Friday a multi-year content partnership with Television personality Oprah Winfrey to produce programs for the tech company’s upcoming video-streaming service.
Apple gave no details of the type of programming that Winfrey would create, the value of the deal, or when it might be released.
Apple shared the news of its deal with Winfrey in a brief statement on its website, which read:
“Apple today announced a unique, multi-year content partnership with Oprah Winfrey, the esteemed producer, actress, talk show host, philanthropist and CEO of OWN.”
“Together, Winfrey and Apple will create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world.”
“Winfrey’s projects will be released as part of a lineup of original content from Apple.”
Apple has not said how it plans to distribute its programming, to which it has committed an initial $1bn.
But The Hollywood Reporter said the deal includes films, television shows, smartphone applications and books that can be distributed through Apple.
The partnership is the biggest original content deal struck by Apple so far as it aims to compete with Netflix Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Time Warner Inc’s HBO.
Apple has deals with other stars including director Steven Spielberg and actresses Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
