Everybody knows that when you are sad, it can be pretty difficult for you to do any form of exercise, even though it is a great way for you to make yourself feel good. The problem is that depression has a way of sapping all your motivation to do anything at all.
The big question is how do you overcome your sadness and get yourself in the mood to exercise when you are not feeling like it? Here are a number of tips to help you motivate yourself.
Running on Empty
Sadness has a major effect on the body. You may experience insomnia, fatigue, and a weakened immune system. Exercising when you’re sad always seem pretty impossible, even though you know it can help alleviate your feelings at the moment.
There are however some psychological techniques that can help you conquer your sadness and get back your motivation.
Avoid waiting for motivation. If you’re just waiting for motivation to come, it probably never will. If you ever find yourself saying, “I’ll run later when I feel like it,” then you should just go ahead and do it.
Make your exercise routine social. Working out with a partner can make your exercise routine more effective. Furthermore, the chances of it happening time and again is higher, and much harder to skip workout sessions since you know your partner won’t be happy about it. Letting somebody else in on your fitness activity makes you happier to be doing it.
Go easy on yourself. Sometimes you just may not feel up to it, either physically or emotionally. At such times, it’s best to take care of yourself in other ways instead.
Learn more. Maybe when you think “exercise,” what comes to mind are gruelling and repetitive routines. It doesn’t have to be that way. Find an activity that’s fun and that you can look forward to, and try not to think of it as exercise at all.
Wear exercise clothes. Wearing exercise clothes might just be the motivation you need. This term is know as enclothed cognition, and it means that what you wear affects how you think. The next time you feel like you should exercise but you really don’t want to, just commit to putting on workout clothes.
Workouts Routines For Motivation
Cardio is a tried-and-true recommendation for anytime you are down on motivation. Regular aerobic exercise has been shown to be as effective as antidepressants, so it’s not surprising that running often tops the list of exercises to jumpstart your mood.
Above all, remember to give yourself a break sometimes. You’re not going to be able to exercise every day, and you might end up feeling like you’re not exercising enough. If you miss a workout, that’s okay. You can always do it again.
