Argentina vs Croatia
World Cup Gp D 7:00pm Thursday 21st June Nizhny Novgorod Stadium
Argentina will be going for their first win of the 2018 World Cup when they play Croatia in Group D on Thursday
Argentina drew their opening game of the tournament against Iceland, with Sergio Aguero’s opener cancelled out by Alfred Finnbogason.
The big talking point of the game was when Lionel Messi missed a penalty that could have potentially secured Argentina all three points.
Argentina have no recentinjury concerns, they are expected to rotate their selection, as coach Jorge Sampaoli has done frequently, having never picked an unchanged starting XI as Argentina manager.
However for Croatia – their 23 man squad has become 22 after Nikola Kalinic was sent home for refusing to come on as a sub against Nigeria.
Argentina: Mercado, Otamendi, Tagliafico; Pavon, Mezza, Mascherano, Lo Celso, Acuna; Messi, Aguero
Croatia: Subasic; Vrsaljko, Lovren, Vida, Strnic; Rakitic, Modric; Perisic, Kovacic, Rebic; Mandzukic
Head To Head
Argentina and Croatia have met on four previous occasions, including a group-stage clash at the 1998 World Cup which Argentina won 1-0 when both sides had already qualified for the knockout rounds.
Argentina edge the head-to-head record with two wins to one, including victory in the most recent fixture when a Messi penalty completed a 2-1 turnaround in November 2014.
Lionel Messi was also on the scoresheet in March 2006, although on that occasion Croatia came from behind to win 3-2.
