Yahoo has announced its shutting down its instant messaging app, Yahoo Messenger on July 17 after 20 years.
The company didn’t give an explanation for shutting its world famous messenger app down, but given that it has long lost it’s popularity and most people didn’t even realize it still existed, a reason isn’t hard to imagine.
With the rise of platforms like WhatsApp which boasts 1 billion daily users, there isn’t much use for the old messenger apps like the Yahoo Messenger app. Its major rival, MSN Messenger was also shut down by Microsoft in 2014 after 15 years.
In a press release, Yahoo said;
“We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning as one of the first chat apps of its kind,”
“As the communications landscape continues to change over, we’re focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.”
