There was confusion in Gombe as a lawmaker representing Akko West constituency in the State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Abubakar allegedly seized the mace and fled the chamber with it during a session.
The incident occurred during an attempt by some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House to impeach the Minority Leader, Mohammed Haruna, who is a member of the party.
The House is dominated by members of the Peoples Democratic Party.
An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, said Mr. Abubakar approached the table and took away the Mace during plenary session.
“While they were debating, he approached the table and absconded with the Mace with the help of Mohammed Bello, a member representing Gombe South constituency who held down the Sergeant-at-Arms.
“Meanwhile, police stationed at the gate of the House shot his car tyres in an attempt to stop him, but he managed to escape with a shattered windscreen and flat tyres” the witness added.
Mr Haruna had on May 5, called a press conference to condemn the conduct of APC ward congresses in the state, for which reason some members of his party wanted him removed as Minority Leader.
However, during the process, the impeachment failed as four out of the eight members of the party in the House declined to support it.
Frustrated by the stalemate, Abdullahi, who represents Akko West, grabbed the mace and fled the chamber.
