It is relatively easy to predict the movies that will be blockbusters given the fact that movie studios tend to earmark their spots on the release schedule years ahead of time.
This is why it is never too early for us to start making predictions of movies that will make it big at the box office in 2018.
While there are already dozens of promising movies that have been scheduled for release, here are some of the movies that we project will be big at the box office according to their release dates.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure
Released on the 26th of January, 2018, Production on the third Maze Runner installment was delayed roughly for a year due to a gruesome injury suffered by lead actor Dylan O’Brien on the set. Much to the relief of the loyal Dan Base of the movie, it wasn’t tossed altogether, despite the setback and a middling domestic box office return on the first sequel, The Scorch Trials.
The series’ will be making a third run at the big screen and will be kicking off nearly a year after its planned release date. However, it still promises to do enough to give audiences their second wind and get them out for the franchise’s finish line.
Fifty Shades Freed
The third round of E.L. James’ books and movie will be hitting movie theaters on the 9th of February, 2018 just in time for Valentine’s Day. The trilogy-ender is bound to be a date night must for the Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) faithful who want to see the climax of his whirlwind, erotic romance with Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson).
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to make a quick stop in Wakanda, home of everybody’s favorite superpowered feline: the Black Panther before we get to see Avengers: Infinity War. The movie scheduled to be released worldwide on February 16, 2018 features T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and follows his story as he returns home after his dad’s tragic death in Captain America: Civil War and sets out to rule his technological wonderland.
Unfortunately however, the new king will find himself facing “a powerful old enemy,” which means there are going to be prison breaks, casino shootouts, car chases, and a one-on-one showdown with Adonis Creed himself.
If you add the animal masks and insanely bright colours, Black Panther promises to be a superhero movie like we’ve never seen before, especially since most fantasy films are based in European or Japanese folklore, so it will be absolutely fascinating to see a genre movie borrowed from African cultures.
With high-profile black actors like Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya, Sterling K. Brown, and Danai Gurira of The Walking Dead and Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman making up the cast and with writer-director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) calling the shots, Black Panther is expected to deliver a brand new world from a fresh perspective that we almost have never seen in Hollywood blockbusters.
Alex Garland is expected to be on the directors chair and if you have seen Ex Machina, then you can relate to the fact that he can make creepy sci-fi movies. This movie is an adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s critically acclaimed novel Annihilation and the story follows a team of female specialists (Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Gina Rodriguez) who venture into a mysterious region known as Area X.
Multiple groups have tried to explore this quarantined zone, only to disappear or wind up dead. One of these unlucky adventurers was Portman’s husband (Oscar Isaac), and now she hopes to discover what happened to him and, hopefully, make it back to civilization alive.
The movie scheduled to be released on February 23, 2018 has a lot of talented people involved, and if the plot and critique are anything to go by, we sure do have a blockbuster on our hands.
This upcoming spy thriller will star jennifer Lawrence and Red Sparrow will be coming with a hard R rating, thanks to a couple of edgy sex scenes. Scheduled to be released on the 2nd of March, 2018, the movie will have Australian actor Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Great Gatsby), sharing Jennifer Lawrence’s bed even though their love affair will be a tricky one.
The movie is based on a novel by Jason Matthews (an ex-CIA officer), and is set during the Cold War. It follows the story of a talented ballerina named Dominika Egorova (Lawrence) who tragically breaks her leg. After she’s sidelined from the stage, Dominika is recruited by the Soviets and trained in the art of seduction. Things however get complicated when she goes up against Edgerton’s American agent.
Red Sparrow will also star Jeremy Irons, Ciaran Hinds, and Charlotte Rampling as Lawrence’s instructor. It will be directed by Gary Ross.
