share on:

Emmy winner Bradley Whitford will play a major role in the upcoming second season of Hulu’s Emmy-winning drama series The Handmaid’s Tale.

Bradley Whitford will play Commander Joseph Lawrence, a major member of the totalitarian and misogynistic government of Gilead; specifically, he’s the head of its economic strategies

Whitford is best known to TV fans as The West Wing‘s deputy chief of staff Josh Lyman, a role that earned Whitford three Emmy nominations, with a win in 2001. (He also won an Emmy in 2015 for his guest role on Amazon’s Transparent.)

The new season of The Handmaid’s Tale will be shaped by Offred’s (Elisabeth Moss) pregnancy and her ongoing fight to free her future child from the dystopian horrors of Gilead. “Gilead is within you” is a favorite saying of Aunt Lydia. In Season 2, Offred and all characters will fight against – or succumb to – this dark truth.
