Every single one of us has experienced food poisoning at one time or the other and we can relate to how uncomfortable it makes us feel. It could be that you chose to eat the Leftovers in your fridge that smelled a little bit iffy because you didn’t feel like cooking something new or you just didn’t want the food to waste.
So, you went ahead to heat the food up in the microwave and chowed down, only for you to find yourself rushing to the bathroom a few hours later.
Food poisoning is basically the term used to describe a group of gastrointestinal symptoms you experience after eating contaminated food. It can be brutal and dangerous but there are a couple of ways you can get through it quickly.
The Types Of Food Poisoning
There are basically two types of food poisoning; bacterial and viral. The Symptoms of food poisoning you may have will basically depend on the organism that is responsible. However, most symptoms will include nausea, vomiting, watery or bloody diarrhea, and abdominal pain or cramping.
Viral Food Poisoning
This is relatively common and the viruses responsible include norovirus or rotavirus. They are usually found on raw produce or spread by a food handler who is sick. You will usually get better on your own with time if these viruses are responsible for your food poisoning.
Bacteria Food Poisoning
If you have bacterial food poisoning such as Salmonella which you are likely to get through contaminated poultry or Escherichia coli which you can get through contaminated beef, you will most likely need antibiotics.
In such cases, there is a high probability that you will experience fever and chills as part of the symptoms too.
Whatever the cause of your food poisoning may be, there are some home remedies that can make you feel better. Staying hydrated is very important, especially since you will be losing electrolytes along with your diarrhoea. Sugar salt solutions or any oral rehydration therapy will do the magic. More so, drinks like Gatorade can also help restore your electrolytes.
Once you’re able to keep liquids down, you can eat, but it is bes you stick to bland foods such as bread, rice, and bananas. These foods won’t upset your stomach more. Do your best to avoid dairy, alcohol, and anything fatty, fried, heavy, or spicy. These foods have th potential to irritate your stomach and make vomiting and diarrhea worse.
Most of your symptoms should clear up within three days, and after that, you can reintroduce all foods and drinks, without limiting yourself to bland food. However, it may take up to a week for your feaces consistency to return to normal, as you may still experience looser stool than usual. You can use probiotics or yoghurt to aid in that process.
Medications such as Imodium or flagyl can help with the diarrhoea while Zofran can be used to treat the vomiting. If you however don’t feel better within three days, see a doctor. You maybe dealing with bacterial food poisoning and may require a stronger antibiotic prescription.
