According to a report on the situation by the Army, a team of soldiers, led by Captain T. Mani (N/14430), was providing security for worshippers during Sunday service in Chibok.

They now received a distress call that Staff Sergeant Ninyo was beating civilians for unknown reasons.

Captain Mani, accompanied by soldiers, moved to the scene and freed the civilians.

But while trying to disarm the errant soldier, Captain Mani was shot dead by Staff Sergeant Ninyo, who later shot himself dead after killing four others.

It was gathered that the corpses of both soldiers have been deposited at a military hospital in Yola, the Adamawa state capital, while troops are equally on red alert to avert any untoward incident.

The incident report said the motives for Mr. Ninyo’s attack on the civilians and the deadly assault on his senior colleague were not immediately clear.

Issuing a statement on the incident, the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, said the Army has raised a board of inquiry to probe what actually happened.

The statement reads, “The Headquarters of 28 Task Force Brigade, Nigerian Army, has instituted a Board of Inquiry (BOI) to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident that resulted in the death of an Officer and a Senior Non-Commission Officer (SNCO), deployed on duty at Chibok, Borno State earlier today Sunday, 12th November 2017.
