Claude Makelele has left his role as assistant coach at Swansea to become head coach of Belgian side K.A.S Eupen.

Claude Makele joined Paul Clement’s coaching staff in January with the pair reuniting after they had worked alongside each other under Carol Ancelotti at Paris Saint-German.

He now takes over an Eupen side which is currently bottom of Belgian’s top flight, having won two of their opening 14 games. It will be the 44-year-old’s second stint as a manager following a five-and-a-half month spell in charge of French club Bastia in 2014.

The former midfield enforcer, who was so successful in his duties that the defensive midfield role was regularly named after him, had been a popular figure among the Swansea squad, who had appreciated his man-management qualities and the wealth of knowledge from an illustrious playing career.

A Swansea City statement read: “Claude Makelele has left his role as assistant coach at Swansea City to become head coach of Belgian top-flight club K.A.S Eupen.

“The Frenchman joined Paul Clement’s coaching staff in January with the pair reuniting after they had worked alongside each other under Carol Ancelotti at Paris Saint-German.

“Makelele played a part in the Swans’ great escape from relegation last season, with Clement’s side picking up 28 points from their remaining 19 games to eventually finish 15th in the Premier League.

“He takes over an Eupen side which is currently bottom of Belgian’s top flight, having won two of their opening 14 games. Last weekend, they drew 4-4 at fourth-placed Sint-Truiden thanks to two last-gasp goals.

“It will be the 44-year-old’s second stint as a manager following a five-and-a-half month spell in charge of French club Bastia in 2014.

“Everyone at Swansea City would like to thank Claude for his contribution to the club, and wish him well in his career.”
