Spain head coach, Julen Lopetegui, has praised the Spanish fans, despite their mixed reaction to Pique, as the La Roja sealed a spot in Russia.
Spain emerged 3-0 winners over Albania, with the win securing their place at next year’s showpiece. But a mixed reaction from the fans towards Pique, has earned the praise of the manager.
The fans booed the Barcelona international at opening training on Monday, and booed him at the start of the match, only to applaud him as he was subbed off.
“The fans have been phenomenal,” Lopetegui said. “It starts to put the focus on the positive things in our football and our country.
“It is like when you see a painting and you just look at the speck of dust. We have to celebrate the good things and we have done it in the dressing room, singing and dancing.”
The announcement of his name in the starting line-up pre-match was meet with jeers, along with his first touch.
However, Pique was brought off to predominant applause in the 60th minute.
