Antoine Griezmann used Manchester United’s interest in him to secure a more lucrative deal at Atletico Madrid, according to team-mate Filipe Luis.
The France international has flirted with a move to Manchester before – he once revealed he was keen to play alongside compatriot Paul Pogba at club level, three months after his then-world record transfer move from Juventus.
After being heavily linked with a move to join Jose Mourinho’s side over the summer, Griezmann opted to sign a new deal at the Spanish club following the news Atletico’s transfer ban had been upheld.
However, Luis believes the forward was always happy to stay in Madrid and claims he was only talking up a potential transfer to Old Trafford in order to secure a a higher wage from the Spanish club.
Griezmann’s new deal keeps him at the club until 2021 and according to reports is worth up to £235k a week.
“[Griezmann] is a kid who speaks very clearly,” Luis told El Mundo. “Often players talk when they feel they are not being valued as they deserve. Then they get more attention. He would have had many offers from many teams.
“A player of his size wants to be up with the biggest in terms of contract and value. And that is fair – as Griezmann is doing great here. In the end, for all the talk about other clubs, he always wanted to stay here and he is still here, happy and liking it.”
