Despite the attack on him by thugs at the popular Wuse market in Abuja on Tuesday that nearly took his life, the self-acclaimed Area Father and entertainer, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has said “we will be at the unity fountain tomorrow ‘ Wednesday’ by 9am to begin from were we stopped.”
The prominent musician who has been leading a campaign for the return or resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari, was attacked in Wuse Market by angry protesters who are believed to be supporters of the president.
It was alleged that pro-Buhari protesters began to throw stones and hard substances at Charly Boy and his cohorts, which left many wounded and Charley Boys BMW vehicle destroyed.
The attack comes barely a week after Oputa and his fellow campaigners were attacked by security officials who dispersed them violently from the Unity fountain, also in Abuja.
“Charley Boy came to this market with some cameramen doing his protest here.
I was standing in front of my shop when I saw him running for his dear life, being chased by those youth,” a trader at the market said.
“They nearly lynched him, because those youth almost overpowered police security near him.”
It is understood that the musician was rescued by security operatives who fired gunshots and tear-gas to disperse the crowd.
The security operatives later returned to remove Charly Boy’s vehicles from the market, using tear-gas to disperse the protesters who tried to stop them.
Also speaking on the attack, in a flurry of tweets, Deji Adeyanju, one of the leaders of the ‘ResumeOrResign’ group, said some youths attacked them when they moved to the market in the course of their protest.
“We just went to Wuse market for mobilization against 100 days event tomorrow & a regular face at Unity Fountain brought thugs to attack us,” Deji wrote on Twitter.
“They attacked us with police on Tuesday. Tried to attack us at Unity Fountain with their government sponsored thugs. Today is Wuse Market.
“Charly Boy’s car was damaged by the thugs. This is a senseless government. #ResumeOrResign.
“There are wraps of money all over Unity Fountain shared by Pro-Buhari protesters. The government says it’s fighting corruption.”
Reacting to the incident, Charly Boy described what happened in Wuse market on Tuesday as unfortunate.
He said: “I urge you to remain calm, peaceful; there is no cause for alarm. We will be out again tomorrow ‘Wednesday’ at the unity fountain by 9am.”
He equally asked for the presence of the police force at the unity fountain on Wednesday to ensure the security of lives and properties.
