The finale of TV shows are expected to leave a nostalgic experience on viewers which is why it is usually a difficult job for creators and writers. They want to satisfy an surprise the audience while giving their characters a good send-off.
It is common to see writers come up with a number of different ways in which their TV shows end but the one that makes the final cut may not necessarily be the best. Here are six TV shows that could have ended in an entirely different way.
How I Met Your Mother
Very few people were thrilled with the finale of How I Met Your Mother and it was for good reasons too as Tracy died from a terminal illness even though the show was supposed to be nothing more than a comedy.
The alternative ending the show was supposed to have was revealed on the DVD release, which saw a much more better ending that saw Ted and Tracy meeting at Farhampton station as a train arrived, and the yellow umbrella floating down the road.
Lost ended in a happily-ever-afterlife for our favourite characters but things could have taken a completely different turn if there was more money. Writers of the show, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse made it known that they had something different planned but the TV network,
ABC deemed it too expensive to film.
The dormant volcano on the Lost island which had been referred to in season three of the show was said to be the last thing holding the world from destruction. Damon Lindelof hinted that they planned to have a lot of seismic activity and fights between the forces of good and evil before the TV show will end in the midst of molten magma spewing everywhere.
Sex And The City
The ending of Sex and The City was a little disappointing as it focused more on Carrie getting her man, as Big flew to Paris to finally propose instead of on the friendship between the four women that made the show.
Furthermore, Carrie married Petrovsky and returned with him to New York. Show creator Darren Star revealed that he wasn’t a fan of how the show ended, saying “I think the show ultimately betrayed what it was about, which was that women don’t ultimately find happiness from marriage… at the end, it became a conventional romantic comedy.”
The finale of Breaking Bad saw Walt saving Jesse but gets killed in the process, dying in the meth lab.
Show creator Vince Gilligan has admitted it wasn’t the only ending that was considered. He made it known that Walt was going to break into the downtown jail in Albuquerque and rescue Jesse.
The other option Vince Gilligan made known was that they wanted Walt to become a complete bad guy were everyone in the cast would be killed off including Skyler and Walt Jr.
The Vampire Diaries
The final episode of the Vampire Diaries was a bittersweet one. First, Stefan sacrifices himself to save Mystic Falls and most importantly, Elena and Damon end up together. The series would have however ended in an entirely different manner if what show creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec plans came to fruition.
Stefan and Damon were supposed to die in an attempt to save their girl, with both brothers watching her like ghosts as she went off into the sunset to live her life.
All this however changed with the departure of Nina Dobrev in season six, putting an end to the Damon/Stefan/Elena love triangle, which meant the planned ending wouldn’t work.
While the finale appears pretty unusual, an alternative ending that would have been funnier was one where the four major characters are all found innocent, much to the chagrin of the people they did wrong to.
