Dimitar Berbatov has told Goals on Sunday that he held talks with Sunderland this season, but nothing came of them.

“I want to play and to be honest I had a couple of conversations with managers, even Sunderland,” he said.

“But in the end nothing happened. When you play for football for so long, and I’m still in good shape and I’m staying in shape, football is my life.

“At this stage of my life it’s only about football now. Just to play a little bit more, one more game or one more year. To enjoy my team-mates, the football, the pitch, the fans. But as I said nothing came of it in the end so sometimes life is what it is.”

Host Ben Shephard also asked him about interest from Liverpool ahead of his move to White Hart Lane.

But he said it was Manchester United who were keen on him instead.

hephard said: “Just before you went to Tottenham I understand Liverpool came in for you?”

Berbatov responded with: “No. Before I came to Spurs it was Man United again calling my agent.

“Something happened and I don’t know what.

“I don’t know what happened.

“It was a long time ago.”

Berbatov did end up going to United in 2008, scoring 48 goals in 108 Premier League games.
