Sevilla lost 3-1 to Atletico Madrid and Jorge Sampaoli believes the loss has ruled them out of the race for the title.
Sevilla could not close the eight point gap Madrid hold over them and with a game in hand, it could grow to 11. Sevilla are also just two points ahead of Atletico Madrid.
Sampaoli is reeling from UCL exit at the hands of Leicester and the loss to Atletico is a hard one to take, as he feels they must fend off the capital club to get the last European qualifying spot.
“It is the first defeat after nine [sic, seven] games and logically the chance of winning LaLiga is moving away,” he told a post-match media conference.
“Now we have to look at the possibility of qualifying automatically for the Champions League.
“It is normal that when you do not get what you want – a win – there is frustration and bitterness [in the dressing room].
“We have taken a very hard blow and we must try to find the solutions and the authentic Sevilla.”
