Derby have made an approach to Gary Rowett about succeeding Steve McClaren as manager
Rowett has been out of work since being sacked by Birmingham in December.
Derby will move quickly in making an appointment – they want the new man in charge before Saturday’s East Midlands derby against Nottingham Forest.
Talks between Derby chief executive Sam Rush and Rowett’s representative are planned for later today.
Derby sacked McClaren on Sunday night after less than six months in charge. It is the second time in three years that the former England manager has been dismissed by Derby.
Rowett’s reputation as one of the country’s finest young managers was forged at Burton Albion, who he helped into the Championship.
The 43-year-old then impressed at Birmingham before being inexplicably sacked and replaced by Gianfranco Zola.
