#FreeAudu: Reactions, Condemnation Trail Arrest Of Maikori, Chocolate City Boss

Audu Maikori, a Nigerian lawyer and CEO of Chocolate City Entertainment, was on Friday arrested by the police over alleged “inciting comments” over the killings in Southern Kaduna.

The arrest is not unconnected to his tweets about a fatal attack on his relatives in Southern Kaduna that turned out to be false.

Maikori, in the wake of the killings in Southern Kaduna, had spread false information through a series of tweets that six students of Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, were killed by Fulani herdsmen, including his driver’s younger brother.

On January 23, in a flurry of tweets, Maikori had said his driver, later identified as Simon Joseph, told him that he lost his brother in a Fulani herdsmen ambush in Southern Kaduna and will be travelling for burial.

“My driver’s younger brother and five others students of college of education Gidan Waya were ambushed and killed by herdsmen yesterday #SouthernKaduna.

“They were in a commercial car going back to school when the driver stopped suddenly under the pretext of checking his engine #SouthernKaduna.

“As soon as the car stopped the attackers shot all 6 students but let the driver who is Fulani go. He gave us these details#SouthernKaduna.

“When we speak we are viewed as trouble makers by the Govt. Well I have seen the pictures and it’s a painful sight#SouthernKaduna.”

Afterward, he tendered an apology, admitting, in a statement he personally signed, that his tweets contained false information, alleging that he was misled by his driver.

The apology came on the back of a statement issued by the College of Education denying Maikori’s version of the incident – as the school denied loss of students to any attack.

On February 4, while offering detailed explanation of how he was misled by his driver in his apology, Maikori wrote:

“I hereby tender an unreserved and sincere apology to the Management of the College of Education, Gidan Waya, His Excellency the Governor of Kaduna State and the Kaduna State Government, and also to the people of Southern Kaduna and the Fulani community and also VANGUARD newspapers whose source was my driver for the false statement by my driver which I also publicized believing same to be true.”

It was not enough as a team of police officers attached to the inspector-general monitoring and intelligence team arrested him in Lagos yesterday afternoon and immediately transferred him to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

His arrest, which many alleged was on the directive of the Kaduna state Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, has stirred reactions and condemnation on social media community since yesterday night with prominent Nigerians calling for his immediate release.

The hashtag #FreeAudu is now gaining grounds on Twitter as netizens are of the opinion that the government should stop hounding its citizens with security agencies and respect freedom of speech.
