Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul pulled the plug on a loan move to Watford because his medical was too long.

Tim Krul then took an Easyjet flight to Schipol after a last-minute change of heartand joined AZ Alkmaar on loan.

Tim Krul was set to sign for Watford on deadline day but grew weary at the length of the medical the Hornets put him through – and decided to move to AZ Alkmaar instead, where he will be guaranteed first-team football.

With Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow and Matz Sels all available to Rafa Benitez , there was never any prospect of him returning to Newcastle. But he will be back in the close season, when the United manager will start with a level playing field

Krul said: “AZ is a fantastic club.

“They are competing in all competitions with: Europa League, the (domestic) Cup and the League.“When they called, I could hardly say no. The way they talked that had so much confidence in me, that I decided to come.

“I have been fit for a while but I have been unable to really show that yet. I hope to regain my old level.”
