Senate Suspends Magu’s Screening As EFCC Chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari has written the Senate to inform the lawmakers that the Acting Chairman of the Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, have been cleared of corruption charges following an investigation into allegations against them.

The president said this in a letter to the Senate re-nominating Magu as Chairman of the EFCC.

Senate Rejects Confirmation Of Magu As EFCC Chairman

In the letter, which was read by Senate President Bukola Saraki on Tuesday during plenary, Buhari said Magu and Lawal were cleared of corruption in a report by the Attorney General of the Federation.

Also in the letter, Buhari said: “Non-application of principles of fair-hearing to SGF Lawal means he has no choice than to absolve him of corrupt allegations.”

However, Senator Shehu Sani denies President Buhari’s allegations that SGF Lawal was not invited or given fair-hearing.

The senator from Kaduna said; “President Buhari’s government uses insecticide to fight corruption in public but uses deodorant to fight corruption in the Presidency!”

Senator Shehu further argued that 7 out of 9 senators signed his Committee’s interim report, not 3 as claimed by President Buhari’s letter, adding that “Buhari’s letter absolving SGF is full of falsehood”.

EFCC: Magu’s Confirmation Was Suspended, Not Rejected – Senate Leader

It would be recalled in December 2016, the senate had refused to confirm Mr. Magu as the substantive chairman of EFCC, citing a security report from the State Security Service, (SSS), as the rationale behind it.

  1. Look, after reading through this report I felt aghast and wondered what the dithering is about, folks? I mean it leaves room for suspicion what the President is up to really because the report states the obvious unles he (the President) jas something more weithier to tell Nigeria as his reason for still sticking to Magu and Alhaji Babachir Davud Lawal – could well remind us about 1985 when IBB and Sani Abacha accused him of not doing DEMOCRACY in the real sense, folks! I mean Buhari said to Nigerians and International invitees present at his inaugural speech – “I belong to nobody I belong to everybody!” and here we are it appears strongly, going by the report, that Buhari belongs to both Magu and Babachir Davud Lawal from the trappings going on in this matters! We wait to see how this saga pans out when Buhari returns to his seat in the Presidency, otherwise the perception now bears heavily on the suspicious side – Nigerians wondering why he cannot find other personnel to carry on with the assignments if these two people, folks!!
