Alexandar Vera, a former middle school teacher in Texas, who got pregnant after sleeping with her 13-year-old student, has pleaded guilty to sexual assault as part of a deal to avoid being jailed for life.
The 24-year-old accused appeared in Houston court on Wednesday and accepted a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Vera, who was an English teacher at Aldine ISD’s Stovall Middle School, accepted the charge, which has a maximum sentence of life in prison, ABC reports
However, under the plea deal, her possible punishment is capped at 30 years and she is eligible for deferred adjudication probation, KHOU reports.
“We’re very much hoping for deferred adjudication,” said defense attorney Ricardo Rodriguez.
A deferred adjudication could mean Vera does not have a conviction recorded, providing she met requirements put in place by the court.
Vera, who maintained that she and the teen are in love, met the 13-year-old boy, who was a student in her 8th grade English class during summer school last summer, according to court documents.
The English teacher said she’s been introduced to his family as his girlfriend, court documents state. The boy’s parents reportedly accepted the relationship, including Vera in family gatherings.
Court documents detailed how Vera allegedly became pregnant with the boy’s baby in January this year, and his family was said to be excited and supportive about the baby.
However, the former teacher had an abortion after being questioned by Child Protective Services, court papers claim.
Vera has been free on a $100,000 bail, but will have to wear a GPS ankle monitor, stay away from schools and have no contact with the teen who allegedly impregnated her.
The boy is currently in foster care while the State District Judge Michael McSpadden will undertake a pre-sentence investigation, in which he will accept letters of support and opposition, review the facts and decide an appropriate punishment at a hearing in January 2017.
