One of the female hostels at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos was gutted by fire at the early hours of Wednesday morning.
While the cause of the fire remains unknown as of the time of this report, it was gathered that the inferno had raged for close to three hours before the arrival of fire fighters.
Speaking to reporters at about 7:30 am, an official of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said that efforts to completely put out the fire were still ongoing.
“We have been able to contain the fire. We can’t actually identify the cause and the extent of damage for now. Operation is still ongoing,” the official said.
The The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fire could not be put out immediately because the college Fire Service ran of water.
It was learnt that NEMA, LASEMA, State Fire Service, Unilag Fire Service And Yaba Tech Fire Service are ‘presently’ all on ground to ensure the safety of the students.
Naij quoted a student of the institution as saying that “many students were rushed to the hospital after the incident, but we heard that there was no death from the incident.”
Another source, within the campus, who could not ascertain if any life was lost, said a student was injured while trying to move her belonging when the fire broke out.
