Militants of terror group Boko Haram have killed another senior officer of the Nigerian Army officer in an ambush, army sources said on Tuesday.
Investigations revealed that the officer, identified as B.U. Umar, a lieutenant colonel and commanding officer of 114 TF battalion of the Nigerian Army, was killed between Bita and Piridang, in the early hours of Tuesday, while leading his troops from Gwoza to Yola, the capital of Adamawa state.
“His vehicle stepped on an improvised explosive device, but he was not hurt,” a source told Premium Times.
“He came out to assess the damage on the vehicle and Boko Haram opened fire and killed him in the process.”
The troops also returned fire and killed an unspecified number of the terrorists.
At least eight other soldiers were injured and evacuated to Michika, Adamawa State, for treatment.
Mr. Umar, who recently took over the command of the 114 battalion about three weeks ago, was a member of the 48 Regular Course in the Nigeria Defence Academy, NDA.
The killing of Mr. Umar is coming barely a week after another Lieutenant Colonel, Muhammed Abu-Ali, and his troops were killed in another ambush by Boko Haram.
