A certain man, Rabiu Yahaya has been apprehended for illegally harvesting tubers of yam on another man’s farm at Zuma village, Maddalla, Niger State.
The suspect, a father of eight children, was arrested by a member of the vigilante in the area, on Friday morning, when he went into the farm, owned by one Luka Musa, to harvest yam without the farmer’s consent.
The vigilante who confided to pressmen in anonymity said while the suspect harvested 12 tubers of yam which he put in a sack, a hunter who was returning home saw him with the yam tubers and became suspicious.
His words: “The suspect harvested 12 tubers of yam which he put in a sack and was about taking them away when a hunter who knew the farmer saw him and came home and informed him of what he saw on his farm.
“The suspect confessed to stealing the yam but pleaded with the farmer that it was hardship that made him to harvest some tubers of yam from the farm.”
The suspected was granted clemency after having narrated his ordeal when some elders of the community waded into the matter.
