Sunderland manager David Moyes says he turned down the chance to sign Joe Hart in the summer.
Hart was linked with the Black Cats before leaving Manchester City to join Torino on loan.
“I could have brought in Joe Hart, we thought he would have been ideal for us,” Moyes told the Shields Gazette. “But I had to think of Jordan’s [Pickford’s] progression too and he hasn’t let us down.
“When I arrived, Vito Mannone was probably the number one on experience but his injury meant we needed to turn to Jordan and he has stood up to all we’ve asked of him.”
“Hopefully he will become England’s No 1 for the future, I don’t see why not,” he added.
“He has the attributes and if he keeps his attitude of working hard, he won’t go far wrong.”
Moyes believes England will have no worries should Pickford be called into action over the next two games.
‘The experience of being with those level of players will only improve him. The speed of passing, the power of the shooting and the accuracy, it’s the defining quality of international players and a step up for Jordan but one he can handle.
the Scot joked: ‘He’s nothing to worry about, in fact I’ll give him a new contract if he throws one in against Scotland…’
