Sevilla’s sporting director Monchi has lifted the lid on Barcelona’s failed negotiations to sign French striker Kevin Gameiro during the summer transfer window.
Barca were keen on signing Gameiro, who ended up joining Atletico Madrid for an initial fee of €30m which could rise to €37m.
Monchi has hinted that Barcelona were only willing to offer a derisory fee for Gameiro, while he added that the La Liga champions did not get in touch with him directly.
Speaking to Catalunya Radio about Barca’s negotiations to sign Gameiro, he said: “It was an interest that lasted the duration of the proposal and I said no. If you want to buy from me this jacket, which is worth €60, and you offer me €5, I say no.
“It did not even reach the minimum necessary. It was what the agent transmitted to me. I did not speak with Barca in any moment. Not with [sporting director] Robert [Fernandez] nor with [director of football department] Raul Sanllehi.”
