Arsenal have entered the race to sign £54m-rated Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, according to the Sun on Sunday.
The 21-year-old, linked with a move to Manchester United, is believed to be on Arsene Wenger’s wishlist for defensive reinforcements.
Arsenal are building their Premier League title challenge with Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny at the heart of his defence.
But German international defender Per Mertesacker has had knee trouble while Brazilian Gabriel Paulista has fallen down the pecking order. That leaves just former Bolton trainee Rob Holding as cover.
Real Madrid are understood to have kept a close eye on Gimenez since he moved to the Vicente Calderon in 2013.
The Uruguay international has 20 months left to run on his current Atletico contract, which has a £54m release clause.
