Troops of the Nigerian Army have gunned down three female suicide bombers while attempting to invade Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, in the early hours of Friday.
Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson in the state, Victor Isuku, a deputy superintendent of police, said that the women who were sighted in Umulari village, along Maiduguri/Damboa road, near Mulai, by the military patrol team around 5:30 AM, had IED’s strapped to their bodies.
He said: “This morning at about 0530hrs, three (3) female suicide bombers with IED strapped to their bodies were sighted by military patrol team in Umarari village, near Mulai towards Maiduguri”.
“They were promptly gun down and the IED on two of them exploded killing all three of them. The unexploded IED on the third was rendered safe and detonated by Police bomb disposal Unit who promptly mobilized to the scene”.
Sources squealed that the bomb explosion left residents in panic and disarray in the wake of renewed attacks by Boko Haram militants.
It was also learnt that all the female bombers were about 12 to 15 years of age.
