Atletico Madrid have managed to secure Belgium star Yannick Carrasco to a new contract expiring in 2022.
The 23-year old has been attracting the attention of European giants such as Barcelona and Chelsea, but has now committed his long term future to the club.
“We are [in talks to sign a new deal at Atletico Madrid]. I have a contract until 2020 but I wish to extend it to stay here longer,” Carrasco said last week while playing down reports linking him with a move to Chelsea. “It’s a lie [that I want to leave]. I have not spoken to anyone. I’m fine here at Atletico and I want to stay here.”
A deal has now been negotiated, with Carrasco set to remain in the Spanish capital for the time being.
“Yannick Carrasco has extended his contract with our club until 30 June 2022. The Belgium international signed his new contract, which increases his stay for two seasons more than the previous one, which finished in 2020,” the club confirmed in an official statement. “Carrasco came to our club last season from Monaco. The Belgian left midfielder played in a total of 43 official games in the 2015-16 campaign, playing 2,402 minutes and scoring five goals, one of them in the Champions League final. He also assisted his teammates for five goals.”
