DC Comics character Wonder Woman has been named as a honorary ambassador of the United Nations (UN) for the empowerment of women and girls.
On the United Nations 75th anniversary at it’s headquarters in New York on October 21, the ambassadorial title would be given to the DC Comics heroine.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson and actors who have played the character in movies, including Gal Gadot who currently plays the character in the DC Extended Universe are expected to be present at the event which will mark the launch of UN’s landmark global campaign which supports the achievement of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls.
Tuesday marked the International Day of the Girl, a day created by the UN five years ago to spread awareness and spark discussion about the unique challenges confronting girls in the world. These challenges are many, ranging from lack of education, abuse, trafficking and even forced marriage.
