Barcelona forward Neymar was the subject of failed bids from Manchester City and Manchester United this summer, according to reports in Spain.
The two Manchester clubs went head-to-head for the Brazilian’s signature, with Mundo Deportivo claiming both were willing to meet his £170m buy-out clause.
Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid were also understood to have been interested before Neymar signed a new five-year contract at the Nou Camp.
However, his agent, Wagner Ribeiro, confirmed Neymar was close to leaving.
He told ESPN Brazil: “He was close to joining PSG. He would have earned €40m (£34m) a year net.
“Neymar was also close to a spell at Manchester United, but he extended his contract to earn less at Barcelona because he wanted to stay at Barcelona.”
