Alan Shearer : Zlatan Ibrahimovic And Marcus Rashford Should Be Partnered Together

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League goal woes would be resolved by partnering him with Marcus Rashford up front, according to Alan Shearer.

The Swedish striker has failed to score in his last six games in the English top flight and fired another blank against Burnley on Saturday.

Resolute defending and superb saves from Tom Heaton played a big part in keeping him off the scoresheet at Old Trafford. However, the former Newcastle striker believes Ibrahimovic’s improvement in the second-half suggests he would benefit from playing alongside a striker with pace such as Rashford.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer said: ‘He looked better when Rashford went up front with him in the second-half. It added more pace to the game.

‘Ibrahimovic has never been blessed with great pace, but when you get to your thirties, you lose a yard of pace. Craig Bellamy came to help me at Newcastle with his pace.

‘I feel as though that’s what Manchester United need, to have him up front along with Rashford to ask more questions going in behind rather than facing up all the time.’

Ibrahimovic individually had 12 shots on goal without finding the back of the net as United failed to score with any of their 37 strikes. Shearer suggested that the striker ‘could have still been playing now’ without scoring

He continued: ‘You’d fancy him to walk away with at least four or five. Tom Heaton made some brilliant saves, one of which was just superb. They kept on going, they kept on passing it, they kept on creating the chances.

‘Some of (Burnley’s) defending was brilliant. You just know that it isn’t working for you whatever you try.’

Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands shortly after half-time after airing his frustrations at the referee Mark Clattenburg. Shearer believes the Portuguese manager is growing frustrated at United.

‘He doesn’t know his best XI yet,’ he added. ‘He’s playing around with the team and the formation as well. He’s still trying to work it all out.’
