The Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, Mr Fatai Owoseni said that police have arrested a 31-year-old woman who abandoned her newborn baby on the street.
The woman named Ifunanya Eme was reportedly arrested on Tuesday. Police say the woman gave birth to the baby girl at No. 1, Prince Bello Street, Ajangbadi in Ojo Local Development Area council of the state.
According to Eme, she was married with three kids before but was separated from her husband then got pregnant for another man who denied responsibility for the baby. She couldn’t take care of the baby so she wrapped her up and left her in front of her house hoping someone else would see her and take her.
“After I gave birth to the baby in the public toilet of our house, I wrapped the baby with a bag and dropped her outside our gate and went inside to sleep. I never thought of checking my baby again. I just wanted someone to find her nothing more” she said.
A passerby heard the cries coming from the baby and alerted the police, who took the baby to a nearby hospital for check up before coming back to begin their investigation into who the baby’s mother was. Their first clue came when some neighbors alerted an Officer, Alim Musa, a Chief Superintendent of Police, about the pool of blood trickling out of a fellow neighbor’s house. When the police got to the residence, the suspect was seen recuperating, while the baby was nowhere to be seen.
The police questioned her once they confirmed from the neighbors that she was indeed pregnant. Ms Eme, who works as a sales person in a tricycles shop, admitted to the offence.
