Some Things To Know Before Watching Netflix & Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’

Netflix is about to release the third chapter from their Marvel Cinematic Universe lineup in Luke Cage.

Luke Cage, the superhero with unbreakable skin would be played by Mike Colter, a role he assumed in the Marvel & Netflix’s Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones and Daredevil and now Luke Cage build up to Marvel’s The Defenders series coming to Netflix as was announced by Marvel in 2013.

Now let’s run through some things you should know before the show drops on Netflix on Friday, September 30.

Firstly, If you haven’t already seen Netflix’s Jessica Jones you might need to quickly go do that as this show is a follow-up to that series. The show is set a couple months after Jessica Jones as Luke Cage has returned to Harlem after all the happenings in Hell’s Kitchen. From Jessica Jones, we found out that Luke wanted his abilities to stay hidden which unfortunately didn’t happen for him as he had to help Jessica take down Kilgrave, now he’s in Harlem and he’s gonna be using his strength and superhuman durability.

Another thing to know about this show is that the Harlem setup is very important to the story, unlike Jessica Jones and Daredevil that were set in the troubled town of Hell’s Kitchen, Harlem is crucial to Luke’s origin story and it also allows the show be predominantly black. Which to me is a good thing.

Now let’s go to the Villain. Daredevil and Jessica Jones had the amazing performances of Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin and David Tennant as Kilgrave which both had near perfect performances, Luke Cage gives us our first black villain as Mahershala Ali comes in to play Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes.

Cottonmouth is known to be a crime lord and nightclub owner with a ‘godfather’ complex. Ali also says he modeled his character after the late rapper Biggie Smalls so that should be interesting to see adding that throughout casting, he constantly listened to a mixtape made up of songs from Big L, D’Angelo, Kanye West, Mobb Depp, Biggie, Erykah Badu,Diamond D and Brand Nubian since the character was from Harlem.

Also some familiar faces from previous Netflix MCU shows would return as we’ll see Rob Morgan reprise his role as mob enforcer Turk Barrett and Rosario Dawson come back as Nurse Claire Temple, a role she played in both Jessica Jones and Daredevil.

There is a strong hip-hop influence in this show and that extends to the music as well. “Black Dynamite” composer Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest member Ali Shaheed Muhammad teamed up to compose the soundtrack of the show.

We don’t know yet if there’ll be any appearances from any of Jessica Jones, Daredevil or even The Punisher, all we know so far is we can’t wait to see what Netflix will give us this time. Prepare your torrent downloaders and your Netflix apps for Friday.
