Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has lifted the lid on his decision to reject Manchester United earlier this summer.
United are believed to have approached the France defender over a move to Old Trafford. The Frenchman, who signed for Real Madrid during Jose Mourinho’s time in charge at the Bernabeu, admits it wasn’t easy saying no to his former manager.
Speaking to Canal Plus, he said: “I decided to stay because that’s what I want and because I’m happy here. It’s not easy to turn down Jose Mourinho but you have to weigh up the pros and cons.
“We’re men, we have to make decisions and that’s the way it is. Manchester United are a very big club but Madrid and I are in sync on my project and there’s not much else to say. His (Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane’s) trust and support is really important to me and from the moment he told me that I was an important player for him there wasn’t much more to say.”
