A Porn-Sniffing Dog? Yup, Meet Weber County’s New Recruit

A new K-9 has joined the Sheriff’s Office in Weber County, Utah. Regular dogs sniff out narcotics or explosives, this dog sniffs out electronic storage devices

The black Labrador named URL, pronounced ‘Earl’ is the state’s first electronic detection K-9. He also has a specially trained nose that helps him sniff out electronic storage devices. These include thumb drives, cellphones, external hard drives, SD cards, iPads and tablets.  The dog comes from the same person who trained the dog that played a major role in the arrest of Jared Fogle. Fogle was a former subway pitchman who was imprisoned on child pornography charges.

Utah police get electronic-sniffing dog

“Whether it’s child porn, terrorism intelligence, narcotics or financial crimes information, URL has the ability to find evidence hidden on any electronic memory device,” a statement from the Sherrif’s office read. Authorities say URL will assist investigators on various cases. It will also help at the Weber County Jail to sniff out contraband such as cellphones.

“URL does not actually search for illegal materials. His highly sensitive nose is however trained to detect unique chemical compounds found in the certain electronic components” the release states. URL is one of just nine certified electronic detection dogs in the United States.
