Kevin Gameiro has accepted the fact he was Diego Simeone’s second choice this summer after the Atletico Madrid boss failed in an attempt to re-sign Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
France forward Gameiro joined Los Rojiblancos on a four-year deal from Sevilla for a fee worth an initial 32m euros at the end of July. Yet the 29-year-old readily admits Simeone had his sights initially set on former Atletico striker Costa.
Speaking to Spanish radio station COPE, Gameiro said: “El Cholo [Simeone] phoned me and told me he wanted Diego Costa, but it was very difficult and I was the other option.
“It does not upset me, that happens in football. Now I’m in Madrid and that’s the main thing. I spoke with Simeone and everything was clear. He is clear and I like that. I am very different from Diego Costa, we don’t have the same characteristics.
