Gianluigi Buffon has seen his replacement in the Italy national team in teenage goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, but is not ready to vacate his spot with the Azzurri.
The 17-year-old who is AC Milan’s first choice goalkeeper, has been seen as Buffon’s international heir.
And the veteran goalie knows he has to compete with the youngster for the starting position, but he’s looking forward to a different era under Ventura.
“Donnarumma is a chosen one,” Buffon said. “There’s a new project, and we’re ready to make our quality available to the coach.
“When you feel you still have something to give then you’re ready for a new project.
“It’s important to be mentally ready for a match like France-Italy. This is the most difficult phase of World Cup qualifying in my career.
“We have the desire to cry again, but [cry] with joy.”
