More residents of Kwoi in Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State have fled, after the earth tremors that ripped through the community on Sunday.
It was learnt that a number of ‘concerned’ residents relocated their love ones to safer grounds as they could no longer bear the brunt of a re-occurrence of another tremor – as it continued on Tuesday.
The mass departure took an intensified dimension on Thursday as several vehicles moved non-indigenes and their properties away.
The reason for the exodus may not be unconnected to a smaller tremor, which was registered 24 hours after Tuesday’s episode, as it heightened fears among locals.
A resident, Dominic Mba, who spoke on the incident, said:
“I have just returned from Jos to move our remaining properties and go back with my family members, because we don’t know what might happen again in this town.”
Also, a school teacher, James Jinjiri:
“There was a small tremor on Tuesday night. The Igbo traders and other non-indigenes made up their minds to leave. Majority moved out between Sunday afternoon and Tuesday. On Monday, there were more vibrations. Those that stayed back were uncertain. Now, they are all leaving. I can’t recall anyone I know who is still around, except the non-Ham (Kwoi dialect)-speaking women married to our men.”
Shops were shut down yesterday as traders moved out their wares to safer grounds.
A senator representing PDP, Kaduna Southern Senatorial Zone, Danjuma Laah, while on visit to the affected area called for calm amidst tension.
He said, “I have come here to see for myself this frightening development. It is unimaginable that such a thing happened in southern Kaduna. In the history of our people, not even our grandparents can recall an occurrence like this. But, as people of faith, let us take it as the wonders of the Almighty.
“It is unfortunate that some people lost their homes and some houses were badly cracked. It is, however, a relief that no loss of life or serious injuries were recorded. Please, go about your livelihood calmly and let’s trust God that this is the end of it all.”
He assured that geo-physicists would visit the area to carry out an investigation and determine the possibilities of fresh occurrence.
