Jidenna has released The visuals To his latest boastful single “Chief Don’t Run.” Watch Video
Above an infectious beat, Jidenna is still showing off his bravado but on a less pop-friendly track than his 2015 hit. “I’m on a yacht with a prince in Dubai now,” he says during the first verse. “I’m with the Dalai Lama’s homies in the sky lounge.” Towards the end of the song, Jidenna references Wesley Snipes’ legal trouble, sing-rapping “Paid my dues/But they still tryin’ to Wesley Snipe us.”
Over potent drums, the Nigerian-American MC raps about his upbringing and early life struggles.
“Me and mom in the shack in the woods, bro,” he rhymes. “I was sleepin’ on the floor with the oven door open / While I dreamt about the places that I would go.”
“Chief Don’t Run,” the latest single from the supposedly forthcoming LP Long Live the Chief, is not steampunk dancehall, but it does feature some vocal processing and a mildly compelling grind of a beat. This isn’t peak Jidenna, but it is more Jidenna, and it’s good to know the Chief is still in business. Hail to him.
Jidenna is also preparing for a Nigerian and South Africa tour as he gets set for his debut album release.
