A mother in South Africa has shockingly stabbed her newborn son in the neck six hours after giving birth to him.
An officer in Western Cape, Constable Noloyiso Rwexana, reported on Monday, August 1, that the incident happened in Cape Town over the weekend.
An assault complaint was filed by a nurse in a day-hospital in Macassar on Sunday, July 31, after the baby’s mother had brought her child into the clinic.
The nurse informed the police that the baby’s mother, 33, “had given birth at home and used a knife to stab the baby before wrapping him up in a blanket and bringing him to the hospital.”
Luckily for the child, the knife didn’t lacerate any major artery, though he did go into shock.
A spokesperson for the Tygerberg Hospital where the baby boy was later transferred, Laticia Pienaar, said the baby’s condition was stable as at Monday.
The child might be required to stay longer with the hospital till the investigation concludes.
The boy’s mother is being charged with attempted murder and was due to appear in Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, August 2.
