Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was keen to link up again with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to Spanish radio station Cope.
They report Mourinho attempted to sign the Frenchman over the summer, offering him double his Real Madrid wages to make the move.
According to Spanish radio station Cope, Mourinho called Varane earlier this summer to convince the 23-year-old to join him at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese tactician reportedly told Varane that United were prepared to double his wages at Real to around £165,000-a-week.
But Varane turned him down following conversations with Real boss Zinedine Zidane, preferring to stay at the Bernabeu and fight for his place.
Varane worked under Mourinho during their time together at Real Madrid.
Mourinho remains in the hunt for a new centre-back despite spending £30million on Eric Bailly from Villarreal, with the futures of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo unclear.
