Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega Picks Wife Rosario Murillo As Running Mate For Upcoming Elections
Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega has on Tuesday announced his wife Rosario Murillo as his running mate and vice-presidential candidate ahead of the elections scheduled to hold in November 2016.
The 70-year-old ruler who had previously served two terms, is hoping that his wife, who is currently the chief government spokesperson, will pull the vote in his favour, as he campaigns for his third term.
The former guerrilla leader, made the announcement while registering his candidacy for re-election.
Ortega had previously described the “joint government” with Murillo as a symbol of equality between the genders.
“We don’t doubt that (the vice presidential candidate) had to be a woman, and who better than the partner who has already been tested with work and proved to be very efficient and disciplined?” said Ortega.
Many Nicaraguans already see Murillo as sharing power with Ortega, the BBC reported.
Several critics in the country are of the opinion that the duo have run the country as though it’s their own, and that Murillo wields significant influence over her husband.
This is even as they fear a return to familial rule in Nicaragua.
However, many still believe that he will win his third consecutive term in the upcoming November elections.
